Planning Your First Trip to Kashmir
Guides
Kashmir, often called Paradise on Earth, is a dream destination for many Indian travellers. A first trip can be overwhelming with so much to see — here's how to plan it well.
**When to go:** Summer (April–June) offers pleasant weather, blossoming gardens and clear mountain views. Winter (December–February) transforms the valley into a snow paradise with Gulmarg's ski slopes at their best. Autumn (October–November) brings golden chinar trees and is a photographer's favourite.
**What to see:** Begin in Srinagar with a shikara ride on Dal Lake and a stay in a heritage houseboat. Visit the Mughal gardens of Shalimar and Nishat, then head to Gulmarg for gondola rides and meadows, Pahalgam for pine forests and the Lidder river, and Sonamarg for glacier views.
**How long to stay:** A well-paced first visit needs 5–7 days to cover Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam without rushing.
**Practical tips:** Carry light woollens even in summer for the evenings, book accommodation in advance during peak season, and always carry a valid government-issued ID.
